The Life of Annie M.G. Schmidt
Annie M.G. Schmidt may very well be the most popular Dutch writer of all time. But what do we really know about her? Schmidt came to fame rather late in life, and until recently, our knowledge of her was mostly limited to what she shared about herself.
Based on a trove of new material, Anna by Annejet van der Zijl recounts the adventures of the woman behind the writer: her stubborn search for love, her tumultuous rise to ‘shadow queen’ status, and the turbulent and sometimes dark personal life behind the fame. The result is an inspiring story of a woman who grew up with very little, but who, thanks to her humor and courage, managed to get the most out of life.
Anna is one of the most successful Dutch biographies ever published. The book was nominated for several awards, including the AKO Literature Prize and the Golden Owl, and served as the basis for the Annie M.G. television series. In 2010, Anna was selected by the NRC Handelsbladas one of the fifteen most important non-fiction books of the first decade of the twenty-first century.
