Before embarking on her career as an author, Annejet van der Zijl worked as a crime reporter foreight years. Inspired by American role models like Truman Capote and Dominick Dunne, she wentin search of the human stories behind those brief newspaper items. With the same degree of empathyand literary talent that characterizes her later work,she reconstructed lives on the fringes of society, but also the unexpected violence of “ordinary” citizens:the bar owner who was no longer able to put up witha customer’s badgering, the bulb grower who slowly poisoned his wife...
